Trojan Vanguard Band
This ensemble involves all performance classes, plus student selected to participate in the color guard. This is a co-curricular activity and takes place both during and after school as described by the Pittsylvania County Course Outline. The Marching Band compete in various competitions throughout the fall, participates in home football games, and is the driving force of spirit for the Tunstall Trojans
Tunstall Concert Ensemble
Students eligibility for this ensemble for students in 7th-12th grade, with the very rare occasions of a 6th grader that shows a high level of maturity and playing ability. This ensemble is made up of students who play and want to show interest in playing percussion. This ensemble travels to local, statewide, and national competitions each year. Members of the organization also represent Tunstall on the international level by competing in WGI Concert Class Percussion each year in Dayton, Ohio
Vanguard Winter Guard
All color guard members are members of the fall marching band. This group emphasizes learning basic flag skill routines, rifle work, dance work and body in motion. Attendance requirements are the same as for marching band. Auditions are held each spring for the following fall season (May). The Vanguard Winter Guard continues on what was being learned in the Fall and takes the basics learned to the next level. Students in this ensemble must audition (December) for entrance.
tUNSTALL High School Symphonic Band
Symphonic Band is for students with two years of instrumental music training. This ensemble is dedicated to teaching music through performance, (i.e. multiple public concerts, higher-order ensemble listening skills, leadership training (conducting), and adjudication (critique). Students in this ensemble will perform music at a grade III-V level* level of difficulty by year’s end.
Tunstall Middle School Concert Band
Concert Band is for students with at least one year of instrumental training (exceptions must be pre-approved). This Ensemble is dedicated to solidifying all the basics and further developing the performers’ individual and ensemble skills. Students in this ensemble will read music at grade II/III level* of difficulty by year’s end.
BegINning Band
Beginning band is for students with little or no musical experience. This class is open to all upcoming 6th grade students. We will use the - Standards of Excellence Book 1 and Essential Musicianship For Band- Fundamental as a general outline, each student will learn the basics of posture, breathing, tone production, and music theory. The primary focus is on individual progress with a high premium on solo performance. This emphasis is necessary to build the confidence of the student and maintain a habit of regular practice and preparation. Students in the 6th grade band will perform music at a grade I/II level* of difficulty by year’s end.
